An eco friendly island backwater stay in Kerala Hearty welcome to OUR LAND!!!
OurLand is an island resort situated on the backwaters of Kerala just 14 kilometres south of Alappuzha in Kuttanad area known as the 'rice bowl of Kerala' due to its wealth of paddy crops. From the outset it has been our aim that the island should maintain its natural vegetation of coconut palm, bamboos, banana and other fruit trees and to secure an organic balance without the use of any pesticides. It has also been of upmost importance to us that we should blend in with the local community who are mainly employed in the surrounding rice paddy fields, or make a living from fishing or duck farming..To-day we are an integral part of this community. Madhu, an excellent organizer and cook is the host on the island and he is assisted by several enthusiastic and loyal local citizens. For many years the original simple cottage was used for our guests. Many guests both encouraged us and gave us some ideas of how to improve the facilities without compromising the natural beauty of the island. We have now modernised the original cottage and built two more airy cottages in Keralean style and have also built a small tree house. All have good sit outs and all have views directly to the backwaters. Many tourists visiting Kerala like to spend time on a houseboat. This is a possibility for our guests as we can arrange for guests to board a houseboat directly from the island. We have, experienced that some guests prefer instead to spend extra time on the island and utilise canoe and small boat facilities so that they can sail down the narrow canals which are not accessable to the larger type houseboats. Our guests can sail, take walks or cycle along the many pathways along the banks or walk through the rice paddy fields to enjoy the countryside and meet the friendly smiling local people. Sailing on the backwaters can be of joy to bird lovers and before sunset hundreds of birds can be found perching in the trees on the island.. If you enjoy unspoilt natural surroundings supplemented with comfortable accommodation good food and wish to explore the nearby area or if you simply want to relax then you are most welcome to enjoy a stay on the island.
